- Stricter Punishments for Domestic Violence in the UAE
UAE Strengthens Penalties for Domestic Violence
The United Arab Emirates has enacted a new law that intensifies efforts against domestic violence and ensures stronger safeguards for victims. Federal Decree-Law No. 13 of 2024 introduces major updates to legislation, broadening the accountability measures for violent acts within families.
Under the new law, perpetrators of domestic violence face substantial fines. Repeat offenders and those who harm minors, pregnant women, or individuals with disabilities will receive particularly severe penalties. Additionally, the law imposes fines on those who know about domestic violence but fail to report them to the authorities.
The legislation addresses various forms of domestic violence, including physical, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse. It also enforces protective measures for victims, such as restraining orders, eviction from shared housing, and prohibiting damage to the victim's property.
